Services

After 25 years as a Head of Music (South Wolds School), Head of Arts (Joseph Whitaker School) and Assistant Headteacher (the Nottingham Emmanuel School), I am now working as an independent music specialist offering advice on all aspects of music education from primary to higher education.

Primary Schools Music Support

I am able to offer visits to support any aspect of Primary classroom and extra-curricular music:  subject review and audit, post OFSTED action, music co-ordinator support, in school training sessions.  However, as my main focus is to support lasting school improvement, I also provide a package of support based on demonstration and team teaching. My aim is to train teachers to deliver the curriculum themselves through observation, joint planning and careful selection of appropriate resources. Each package is individually tailored to a school’s particular needs and can vary in approach and length.

Additionally, I can offer the following services:

Gaining Recognition

Primary schools often provide so many opportunities for their pupils that they easily meet the requirements of national awards such as Artsmark. However, all too often there just isn’t the capacity to complete the necessary paperwork to gain such recognition. Having gained Artsmark Gold for two schools and had excerpts from my application used as exemplar material in national Artsmark publications, I am in a strong position to offer support. I can audit your arts provision, give advice on how best to meet the criteria and help you to submit a successful bid.  I also have a successful track record in promoting excellence through school magazines, newsletters and local media.

Arts Award

Until now, only Year 6 pupils have been eligible for accreditation through the Arts Award. Coming soon for children as young as 7, however, is Arts Award Discover, which is all about exploring the arts through seeing, trying, doing and enjoying new things. As a soon-to-be qualified Arts Award Adviser, I can introduce the scheme to schools, and support children working towards the awards, acting as mentor, facilitator and assessor.

Music for Worship

As a composer and performer of liturgical music, I can work with staff and pupils to set up a high quality children’s vocal and instrumental group, using traditional and contemporary music and composing music for special occasions.

Combined Schools Music Forum/Professional Development

I can facilitate the sharing of good practice as well as providing hands-on, tailor-made training for primary music co-ordinators across a group of schools.
